President Biden’s Energy Ban Opposed by Petroleum Association of Wyoming

President Biden’s Executive Order (EO) #14008 is being challenged jointly by the Petroleum Association of Wyoming (PAW) and Western Energy Alliance (WEA). The EO #14008 bans new oil and natural gas leasing on public lands. This week, after the failure of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to hold their lease sale for the first quarter this week, the Wyoming state trade association filed as a joint petitioner.

Pete Obermueller, president of PAW, said, “While many have tried to spin President Biden’s Executive Order as harmless, that narrative is simply false. On average, Wyoming schools could have expected $4 million from this week’s lease sale–enough money to educate 220 Wyoming school children for an entire year. We join this lawsuit to show that the president’s leasing ban has resulted in real harm to Wyoming and those consequences will continue if this ill-advised EO is not overturned.”

Wyoming ranks to be the first in natural gas production on public lands and is second in oil. According to the data received from the Office of Natural Resources Revenue, nearly43.5 million barrels of oil and 1.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas were produced on public lands only in 2020.

President of the Alliance, Kathleen Sgamma, said that they are pleased to have PAW join their litigation. She said that they filed in Wyoming because they have the most significant federal acreage under the lease. They have now assembled a home team. She believes that President Biden’s ban is a threat to one of Wyoming’s largest employers directly. She feels that the decree may make sense to people in Washington D.C. but not in Wyoming.
