The American Petroleum Institute Signs MOU with the Center

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed by the American Petroleum Institute (API). The MOU has been signed between API and the Center for Local Business Development. The MOU establishes the framework for using API’s programs and collaborations. API has programs that enhance health, safety, security, and environmental protection in Guyana’s energy sector.

Alexa Burr, API Segment Standards & Services Vice President, said, “Guyana is swiftly becoming a leader in offshore energy development, and today’s MOU is a reflection of the country’s growing energy industry. We are honored to take this step in strengthening Guyana’s local manufacturers and suppliers and look forward to deepening our collaboration on safety, health and sustainability issues.”

The American Petroleum Institute and the Center have identified opportunities for collaboration on training over the years. Training programs aim to support local businesses and workforce development for the oil and natural gas industry. It will also help to build the technical capacity of Guyanese firms to compete in the sector.

Director of the Centre, Dr. Natasha Gaskin-Peters, said that the center is excited to be taking steps further into the phased development of Guyanese suppliers. The Centre is moving from base knowledge of the oil and gas sector to technical expertise, allowing more local content.

The sole purpose of the MOU is to enhance cooperation between the Centre and API on various fronts, including:

  • Training expansion and implementation of The American Petroleum Institute specifications which are industry-leading quality management systems
  • Develop API-U courses and special instructor-led training for the Guyanese companies
  • Provide updates on the regulation that is affecting the Guyana oil industry
