Xcel Energy Buys low-emission Intensity natural gas from Crestone Peak

Crestone Peak Resources, Xcel Energy and Project Canary are teaming up to form a low-emission intensity natural gas program in Colorado.The low-emission natural gas are produced by Crestone Peak Resources is being purchased by Xcel for its Colorado operations to make natural gas more sustainable by using environmental, social and governance information.

Alice Jackson, president of Xcel Energy in Colorado, talked about the partnership’s aim to create cleaner energy through sustainable efforts. Jackson said that they are committed to reducing methane emissions from our own operations and using our buying power to encourage our suppliers to reduce their emissions as well. This is why the company is pleased to work with Crestone Peak Resources and Project Canary on a pilot project that indicates to customers our dedication to delivering them a cleaner energy product.

Xcel Energy, Colorado’s largest energy provider and the first U.S. provider to announce its aims to deliver 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050, revealed the steps being taken to reduce methane and carbon dioxide in natural gas through the partnership.The news release also said that the partnership with Crestone Peak Resources, a leading energy producer in Colorado, confirmed there is a need for responsibly sourced gas. As a way to reach clean energy, the companies verify and monitor best environmental practices.

Project Canary is a Denver-based benefit corporation that is emissions-driven, and recognized for methane leak detection and monitoring. With their monitoring process and TrustWell certification process, the partnership among the three companies will work to make natural gas more sustainable, while remaining beneficial for consumers and producers.

Romer Cofounder and CEO of Project canary said that  methane is 80% worse than carbon dioxide, so stopping methane leaks is crucial in the efforts to stop climate change. Natural gas will help solve climate change because it is a low-carbon fuel.Romer said he was thrilled that Xcel Energy was utilizing Project Canary’s TrustWell certification and methane monitoring process to reduce methane emissions in its supply chains. He discussed why this process is important to him and the environment.
